What is bentonite clay?
Bentonite clay is a natural clay with a fine and soft texture. It forms a kind of paste when you mix it with water. Bentonite clay is often used for cosmetic purposes, eg to soothe irritated skin and acne or as a hair and face mask.
Unlike some other clays, bentonite is a virtually odorless clay that does not leave any stains, so it is very easy to use in all your homemade cosmetic hair and skin products.
Where does bentonite clay come from?
The name bentonite clay - also called montmorillonite clay - comes from the American Fort Benton in Montana. This is where the largest source of bentonite clay in the world is located. Bentonite clay is the trade name given to this natural clay. Today, Bentonite clay is mainly produced in the United States, but also in France and Italy.
Why Use Bentonite Clay?
Bentonite clay has a high concentration of minerals such as silicon, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron and potassium. It absorbs and removes toxins, heavy metals and impurities.
What makes bentonite clay unique is that when it comes into contact with a liquid, the properties of the clay change in such a way that it can attract toxins into the skin. The clay will absorb the toxins like a magnet, and the minerals in the clay will penetrate your skin for the body to use.
What can I use Bentonite clay for?
When bentonite clay is mixed with water and applied to the skin as a face mask, the clay can bind bacteria and toxins and remove them from your skin.
Bentonite clay is a natural antibacterial treatment and can soothe irritated skin. Bentonite clay is also an ideal natural solution for babies who suffer from a diaper rash that will soften the skin.
Bentonite clay also attracts toxins and other harmful substances in your mouth in the same way as it does on the skin. It can be used in natural homemade toothpastes and can be mixed with water as a daily mouthwash.
Bentonite clay can be used as a hair conditioner because the minerals present in bentonite clay help to moisturize our scalp, stimulate hair growth, give hair a natural shine, soothe dandruff, and prevent scalp irritation.
Last but not least, bentonite clay is a natural cleaner (cleanser) and bacteria killer. It is therefore perfectly suitable to add as an ingredient to your homemade and natural deodorant or perfume.
Recipes to use Bentonite clay

- As an alternative to baby powder: Apply a small amount of bentonite clay directly to irritated baby's skin, leave it on for a few minutes, before rinsing it off with lukewarm water.Always test a very small amount first to make sure that no allergic reaction occurs
- As a hair mask: In a bottle or bag, combine half a bag of bentonite clay with 6 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, half a tablespoon of castor oil, half a tablespoon of almond oil, and a tablespoon of water. Mix the mixture, and apply to damp hair, leave for 20 minutes, and rinse with a natural shampoo.
- To reduce inflammation. Add half a bag of bentonite clay to your bath.
